1000 Gestalten

Project Manager, Photographer, Head of Photography

In July 2017, I played a pivotal role in the "1000 Gestalten" performance, a profound public art demonstration that coincided with the G20 summit in Hamburg. This project was a collective endeavor that utilized visual art to make a bold statement on societal change and the potential for a different kind of world—one not defined by capitalist values but by human connections and natural simplicity.

As one of the coordinators of costume preparation and production management, I was deeply involved in the logistical aspects that brought this vision to life. My responsibilities as well included organizing the photo team and capturing the haunting images during the performance, documenting this powerful moment of collective expression and transformation.

"1000 Gestalten" featured 1000 performers covered in grey clay, slowly moving in a zombie-like procession through Hamburg's streets, symbolizing a society lost to consumerism and repressed emotions. This silent, slow march culminated dramatically as participants shed their clay shells to reveal brightly colored clothing underneath, symbolizing the shedding of societal constraints and the reawakening of vibrant individuality.

Following the performance, I curated an exhibition at Mensch Meier Berlin, which showcased the powerful imagery and moments from the event. This exhibition served as a reflective space for participants and viewers alike to revisit the impactful scenes and themes of the performance, further extending its influence and fostering ongoing dialogue about societal transformation.

The "1000 Gestalten" event reached a global audience, both in person and through a viral online presence, sparking discussions and inspiring viewers worldwide. As a photographer, my images captured the raw emotion and pivotal moments of this transformation, helping to amplify the message of the "1000 Gestalten" well beyond the streets of Hamburg.

This project was a keystone in my ongoing commitment to activism through art, showing how creative expression can intersect with political events to provoke thought, evoke emotions, and drive societal change.
