The Congo Project

Photographer, Project Manager

In December 2014, I embarked on a transformative journey to the Congo alongside artist Natisa Exocé Kasongo. Originally intended as a research expedition to explore the ancestral roots of Kasongo, the trip evolved into a profound initiative aimed at cultural revival. We ventured into the heart of the Kasai region, delving deep into the remnants of its traditions and laying the groundwork for a significant ongoing project.

Our mission is centered on empowering the local youth, encouraging them to explore and embrace their creative excellence grounded in their indigenous culture, rather than conforming to Western standards. Throughout the journey, I captured every encounter with my camera, documenting the rich tapestry of community meetings, cultural exchanges, and the vibrant expressions of local performers and artists. These encounters revealed a spectrum of creativity, from avant-garde expressions to deeply rooted traditional practices, showcasing a community rich in artistic diversity.

The project, though still in its nascent stages, continues to develop, focusing on fostering a deep, sustainable connection between the youth of Kasai and their heritage. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire a new generation to rediscover and rejuvenate their cultural roots, ensuring that their traditions are not only remembered but vibrantly alive and evolving. By integrating modern artistic expressions with traditional forms, we strive to create a dynamic platform for cultural and creative growth.
